The Chico City Council approved a five-year sewer rate increase at its March 17 meeting. Rates will thus increase 180% in August, and there will be a five-year cumulative rate change of 215%.
Public Works Department Deputy Director of Engineering David Kehn presented the challenges caused by the long-term underfinancing of the sewer system.
The increase was approved 4-3, with councilmembers Dale Bennett, Addison Winslow, Bryce Goldstein and Katie Hawley voting in favor.
“We are here because we should have done something better 20 years ago,” Vice Mayor Bennett said. “If we had to partially shut down the sewer plant, that would be devastating.”
