Literary journal holds launch party

Califragile.org provides poetry relevant to the "modern world"

ChicoSol honored twice by CNPA

The California News Publishers Association, which runs the annual California Journalism Awards contest, has awarded ChicoSol second and fifth-place honors for its coverage of homelessness and the 2024 election.

Yucheng Tang earned second place in the Local Coverage of Election 2024 category for a story on the District 7 Chico City Council race. The article featured interviews with candidates Deepika Tandon and Bryce Goldstein, highlighting their contrasting views to help voters make informed decisions.

Yucheng Tang and freelance photographer Karen Laslo were awarded a fifth place in the Homelessness Reporting category for their article on the Haven of Hope on Wheels. Tang wrote about the importance of the Oroville-based program, which provides free showers and laundry service for homeless people, and Laslo provided photos.

City Council plans for bike lanes

Chico City Council voted unanimously May 6 to plan quick-build protected bike lanes to ensure safety on West Sacramento and Warner, routes heavily used by Chico High School students.

Councilmember Addison Winslow initiated the discussion “because too many kids have been getting hit by cars on West Sacramento.”

Seven out of eight speakers during the public comment session supported the motion, while one opposed it.

Chico High student Olivia Council said her 17-year-old classmate was struck by a vehicle driven by a Chico State student last year and suffered a brain injury and coma. “I believe safe bike and walking paths will positively impact Chico civilians, students and many more,” Council said.

Attorney Rob Berry opposed the plan. “You can’t make a plan that benefits some people and then externalize the cost of that plan on the other people,” Berry said. “Those 58 parking places are there for a reason.” — Yucheng Tang
