Governor’s race: Hilton vs. Becerra

Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra will probably compete to be California governor in November, unofficial results indicate.

Hilton garnered almost 28% of the vote with 1.4 million votes and Becerra almost 26% with 1.3 million. Democrat Tom Steyer was third with almost 20%. The top two candidates will appear on the ballot in the November general election.

The top candidates raised large campaign amounts from out of state: 33% of $14.2 million for Hilton; 24% of $13.6 million for Becerra. Hilton’s top contributors were Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions of Oregon; $484,299; Rupert Murdoch and Fox TV, over $40,000; and Hilton himself, $190,099. 

Becerra received nearly 100 contributions from individuals, PACs and companies for the maximum allowable amount of $39,200 each.
