A City Council majority voted this evening (Sept. 21) to purchase $6,000 in Motorola software to further audit the extent of data sharing that happened prior to July 8. The data that was shared was produced by automated license plate reading (ALPR) cameras.
The Council voted 4-3 to purchase the software, which was mentioned in Chico PD’s Program Review that says the police department is unsure of the “exact capabilities” the software offers.
The vote followed meeting tumult after 24 members of the public spoke against Chico PD’s ALPR program, and Council progressives tried in vain to pass a motion that would downsize the use of the cameras and establish community oversight.
