White nationalist rhetoric has become common in U.S. mainstream politics – and some educators point out that it also has a long history of prevalence in the North State.

Chico State University professor Shawn Schwaller said such language is now common in this “extreme political climate,” and its use has been increasing since 2016. Extremist language often affects, in particular, marginalized communities.

“When you hear Trump and his cronies talk about immigration, they sound a lot like the nativist supporters of the State of Jefferson movement in the North State, who have sought for years to break a portion of Northern California off from the rest of the state to create a white ethno state,” Schwaller said. read more

Picture this: It’s a hot day in the North State in early July, and after a 3 p.m. meeting with an attorney, a Glenn County personal trainer stops at a gas station to fill his tank. Suddenly, several vehicles including a Ford Explorer pull up around him. Eight men surround him and tell him he’s under arrest.

That’s roughly how the terrible odyssey back to Mexico began for a Chico-area man who opted for deportation after an interview at Redding’s Immigration, Customs & Enforcement (ICE) sub-field office. ICE gave him a couple of options, neither of which sounded good: Spend what might be years in an overcrowded detention cell or deport. read more

North state raids on immigrant communities underway

ICE plans to be in area for a week

Federal immigration officials recently briefed the sheriffs of three counties – Shasta, Tehama and Glenn – on north state raids that are expected to last about a week, Glenn County Sheriff Rich Warren said today.

Warren said raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were supposed to start three days ago and were expected to continue for several more days. He said he has not been informed about any arrests in Glenn County, nor was he aware of any bookings of immigrants at the county jail.

Warren said the sheriffs were assured by ICE that the only immigrants to be arrested would be those for which a criminal warrant had been issued.

“We’d have a serious problem with” ICE targeting non-criminals in Glenn County, said Warren, who has been sheriff for two years, and with the department for nearly 30.
