ChicoSol garners five awards for 2023 reporting

ChicoSol was awarded first place in the Community Focus category in the statewide newspaper contest run by California News Publishers Association (CNPA).

ChicoSol competed with major California newspapers for the award, announced by CNPA July 14.

ChicoSol won a third place in the Youth and Education category, fourth in Investigative Reporting, fourth in Health Reporting, and fifth in Housing and Land-Use Reporting.

Refusing shelter: Why some beds are empty

Why do vacancies persist in the City’s menu of sheltering options? This is what ChicoSol learned as it reported on homelessness during the past two months:

–Some pallet shelters are kept open for referrals when the City is undertaking evictions from public spaces — which has been often this past year.

A shooting at the campground

On a Friday morning in September, North State Shelter Team (NSST) volunteers run the mobile shower unit during their weekly visit to the alternate site campground. Hope Commons Church has brought coffee and rolls for unhoused residents. Suddenly, a ping ping ping interrupts quiet conversations.
